Building

Win a plot of land at the house auctions, learn carpentry and build your own house on it, floor by floor and wall by wall, from the stone, planks and fittings that every profession gathers. Every piece is yours to place, take down and build again, and the house stands until you give the land up.

A master carpenter's house on a large plot outside Thais: ornate walls and floors, two marble doors, and rooms full of crafted furniture.

Win a plot

Plots are fenced pieces of land outside the towns, and each one is a house: it goes to auction on the website like any other, a Premium character bids, the winner pays rent, invites guests and names sub-owners. The fence gate is the front door.

Any shape the land allows

Plots aren't squares. Each follows the land it stands on, around a road, a river or a hill, and is sized by its area.

Carpentry

Carpentry is the fifth profession, with its own level, tools and skill tree. Tobin in Thais teaches it and sells the hammers. It levels from crafting pieces and placing new kits, and from sawing and forging the materials.

  • Carpenter's Hammerlevel 1050 gold
  • Copper Hammerlevel 2525,000 gold
  • Steel Hammerlevel 40100,000 gold

  • Each tier of pieces opens at a carpentry level: 10, 25, 40, 55, and 70.
  • The Craft skill in carpentry's tree adds to every build's chance.

Built from every profession

Every piece takes the materials of its own tier, so a tier 5 house needs tier 5 stone, planks and fittings from the most dangerous places.

Your own workbench

Ask Tobin in Thais or Veldhaven for a carpenter's workbench. Bring 33 kindling and 184 gold, and he builds it for you: its kit goes into your backpack. Set it up on your own plot, and everything you build there is made at it.

  1. 1Pick a pieceThe workbench lists every piece with the materials it takes from your backpack and your chance, and marks those your carpentry level doesn't reach yet.
  2. 2Your chance70% at the tier's level, 1.5% more for every level above, up to 90%, plus Craft. A failed build uses up the materials.
  3. 3A kit in your backpackA success puts the piece's construction kit into your backpack. Kits are ordinary items: keep them, trade them or sell them to other builders.

What a house costs

A small plot's wooden shell, 64 floors, 27 walls and a door, takes about 15 hours of gathering. Higher tiers take fewer hours, as gathering succeeds more often at higher levels, but their materials come from far more dangerous places.

Placing and taking down

Use a kit on a tile of your own plot and the piece stands there. Owners and sub-owners can build.

  • FloorsA floor replaces the grass or sand under it. Leave a house's top-right and bottom-left corners unfloored: the wall there covers only part of its tile, so a floor under it shows outside the house.
  • Walls joinWalls, doors, windows and fences go one to a tile, and walls join their neighbours into corners and straight runs by themselves. A door or window takes the frame of the wall it stands in, and a door or window kit used on a built wall takes the wall's place.
  • Keep the way inNothing may cut any part of your plot off from the gate, so a closed room needs its door before its last wall.
  • Take it downOwners and sub-owners can use a hammer on any piece built on the plot, and it comes back down into its kit, whole. Rebuild as often as you like.

The upper storey, roofs and stairs

Every plot has room for one storey above. Climb a scaffold to get up there, lay the same floors as below and build walls, doors, windows and fences on them. A roof kit used on a built wall or floor lays the roof on the tile above, over either storey, and pitched roofs join into a ridge and hang their eaves by themselves.

The same house with a tiled roof: its two halves meet at the ridge.
  • Tiled Roof
  • Scaffold
  • Marble Stairs
  • Ladder
  • The scaffoldSet a scaffold on a built floor and use it to climb onto its platform one floor up. Lay your first floors around the platform, and use the platform to climb back down.
  • Held up from belowA floor up there needs a built wall, window or door under it, or a held floor beside it, so nothing ever hangs in the air. While the scaffold stands, its platform holds the floors beside it.
  • Rooms upstairsWalls, doors, windows and fences go on the floors up there just as below, and a roof kit used on a wall up there roofs the upper storey.
  • StairsStairs go on a built floor and lead up to a floor north of the opening above them (wooden stairs also west), with room to step off below. Use the stairs kit on the scaffold and they take its place, and the scaffold kit comes back.
  • A ladderA ladder goes on a built floor against a built wall, with a floor beside the hatch above it. It can take the scaffold's place too.
  • Taking it downA hammer used below takes down the piece above first. A floor that holds up another, carries a wall or is where a way up arrives stays until those come down.

Crafted furniture

Carpenters also make furniture at their workbench: tables, chairs, beds, rugs, banners, lamps, plants and statues, in designs that no shopkeeper and no store sells. Each one comes out as a kit with its maker's name on it, to unwrap in your own house or on your land, keep or sell.

The land island

Veldhaven is a new town of settlers. There are no houses for sale here, only land: win a plot at the house auctions and build on it.

The pier of Veldhaven: the ship that brings settlers from the mainland and takes them back.
  • Veldhaven has 30 plots: 12 small, 12 medium and 6 large.
  • Ships sail there from Thais (160 gold), Carlin (110 gold), Venore (60 gold), Ab'Dendriel (70 gold), Edron (20 gold), Port Hope (150 gold), and Liberty Bay (170 gold).
  • Veldhaven is a Premium town.

Losing a plot: 80% back

If you move out, lose Premium, leave the rent unpaid after the warning letters or delete the character, the house is torn down and the land's own ground comes back.

80%80% of every material spent on the house, rounded down, comes back to the plot owner's inbox in the plot's town, in a parcel with a letter. Furniture goes there as kits, as always.A stone wall took 17 limestone and 25 copper fittings: tearing it down returns 13 limestone and 20 copper fittings.
  • Selling the plot to a named player keeps the house standing: every piece passes to the buyer.
  • Taking a piece down with a hammer always returns its whole kit. Only losing the plot costs the other 20%.
